BBC Learning Zone

The BBC have a vast number of useful resources for teaching and learning.

The Learning Zone is a good place to start. This page can give you access to:

Class Clips which are short video clips which may be useful in the classroom to make a point or start discussions. The are suitable clips for all levels (primary, secondary and college).

Schools Television - providing a schedule of programmes coming up and a link to Bitesize Revision resources and teacher's notes.

Language and Travel - providing a schedule of programmes coming up and links to some useful language websites.

Screen Capture - Jing

I have mentioned screen capture tools in the past but JING is another free alternative. Easy to use, you need to download the software to your computer and register for an account then set an area of your screen that you want to capture and record your screen. Once finished you can upload this to the Jing server and you will be sent a URL to access the video at any time.

World Atlas

Discovery Atlas enables the user to zoom in on a country of choice and then to learn more abpout that country with text and videos covering the themes Culture, Governmnet, History and Natural World. This is a fun way to learn more about the world.

Free Online Courses

As summer is approaching some of us may be thinking about how we can usefully spend a few spare hours. CoursesForFree offer links to a number of free online IT related courses that are worth looking at if you have time on your hands.

Avatars - Doppelme

There has been an increase in personalisation of websites and one of these additions is personal avatars.

The Doppelme website enables users to create their own avatar which can be added to their website, forum or blog.

Wikis

This weeks blog is about Wikis. A wiki is a website that facilitates the creation and editing of linked webppages. These are often used by groups of people for collaborative work.

There is a wealth of wiki software available and I do not propose to say which is the best merely to an example and highlight some uses for these.

One popular and easy to use site which provides wikis is Wetpaint.com which is free to use. Although advertisements are placed on wetpaint wikis, these can be removed from education sites. Wetpaint has links to some sample wikis for education which can provide examples of how these can be used. I particularly liked the Knowledge Media which has some interesting links.
